Inland fishery and IJsselmeer fishery

There has been professional fishery in Dutch inland waters for many centuries, and recreational fishery in these waters is becoming increasingly popular. In inland fishery we distinguish IJsselmeer fishery and professional inland fishery in the other inland waters.

Eel is an important fish species for professional fishermen in inland waters. They fish for them, but they also play an important role in recovering the eel stocks. They developed a plan in which more than 150,000 kilos of mature eel are artificially restocked in sea each year in order to breed.

On lake IJsselmeer there is fishery with ± 60 vessels that are partly to fully dependent on fishery. The most important fish species are eel, bass, pike-perch and smelt.

There is also professional fishery in many Dutch inland waters, ranging from rivers, canals and lakes to polders. The number of fishery companies outside lake IJsselmeer amounts to approximately 170.
